On Location, June 18

In Advance
Acrylic on gessoed, cradled birch panel 11 x 14 x 1 inches, wired at back and ready to hang. Painted on location from the front seat of my car.............afternoon, June 18, hot, humid, windy, the skies changing by the minute and the air feels unstable...something is coming......

On Location, June 14

Yesterday evening....I always enjoy seeing Rice Lake from a distance. Perfect quiet...only one car passed. The evening light was shining on the painting a bit too much, but the passenger seat visor helped. I intersperse this plein air method, with my other ways of making. I like to paint on location at least once a week.....the other days are devoted to studio work.

Black Cherry Firewood

Black Cherry Firewood
I was surprised that my little 14 inch battery pack chain saw was able to so easily handle the cutting of all this firewood (the biggest rounds are about 14 inches). In the process, I learned to effectively sharpen the chain, and do some fine tuning regarding saw maintenance. Splitting this black cherry wood with a splitting axe is surprisingly easy....nice clean splits. I wish I'd gotten to more of the blow-down in this mature woodlot in earlier years, but these battery pack chainsaws are relatively new, and it's not nearly as pleasant using a gas chain saw to do this work. I don't even attempt to do anything with the widow-makers that you can see here.....the black cherry that you see leaning is hung up on another tree, so it likely won't fall properly for a few years.

Spring Squares

These square paintings are on 7.5 x 7.5 archival paper....from the last few days. On the same surface and size, there is also a group of abstract collages that are happening.

Five Nights in Maine

Some of my the movie "Five Nights in Maine". Written and directed by Maris Curran, starring David Oyelowo (Golden Globe Nominee), Dianne Wiest (Academy Award Winner) and Rosie Perez (Academy Award Nominee)
I think they used about 6-7 of my paintings...but I couldn't get clear views of the rest. Sorry for the horrible photos...I don't think you can really photograph a paused image...the screen flickers. This is an unbearably sad movie....

Timid Around Chain Saws??

......a bit timid around chainsaws???
I have 2 chainsaws...but this is by far my favourite. It's powered by a battery pack that fully charges in about 2 hours. With that charge you can make about 50 cuts...which is about all that pile of wood you see in one photo. The advantage of not using gas is...first....there is no pulling to start. It's push button start, and there is NO idle. You simply press the trigger when you want to make a cut, and the machine fully stops when you... release. No messy, noisy gas motor! This saw is wayyyyy can use it without ear protection, although I always use ear protection anyway. It is good for light to middle duty work. To fell a large tree you would still need a gas chainsaw, but with this you can chop up a some pretty reasonable sizes. I use a leather sling (the pink dealy) to walk the cut up sections to the forest path, where I will load then into my garden tractor cart.

This chain saw is much easier to use than a gas powered one...but all chain saws can be very dangerous. If you have never handled a  chain saw before, take a short course on saw safety from a selling center, or get pointers from an old hand. Learn the 'dos and don'ts' and stay safe!
